If this has happened to you, don’t worry: you’re not alone. The fear of making mistakes or looking ‘silly’ is the number one enemy of anyone learning a new language. However, we’ve got some good news for you (and it’s likely to change the way you view your Spanish lessons): making mistakes isn’t a failure; it’s the only real path to fluency. In fact, putting your foot in it is your greatest superpower. Let us tell you why.
The brain learns by ‘breaking’ things
Learning Spanish isn’t like studying history or maths; it’s not about memorising facts and regurgitating them in an exam. It’s a motor and social skill. Do you remember when you learnt to ride a bike? You probably fell off a few times, grazed your knees and lost your balance. Nobody learns to ride a bike by reading an instruction manual.
It’s the same with Spanish. Your brain needs to hear how the words sound, experiment with the subjunctive and, yes, make mistakes, so that you can get it right next time. Every time you say ‘estoy caliente’ instead of ‘tengo calor’ (a classic slip-up we’ve all made) and people laugh good-naturedly, that correction is etched into your memory. You’ll never forget it for the rest of your life.
We Madrileños love it when you give it a go
Sometimes students think that native speakers will get annoyed or bored if they don’t speak perfectly. Nothing could be further from the truth! In Madrid, we’re open, loud and we love a good chat. If you go to a bar in the Atocha area and try to order your coffee in Spanish, even if you conjugate verbs incorrectly or make up words, the barista will really appreciate your effort. Imperfection creates a connection. People aren’t looking for you to speak like a grammar book; they want to understand you and share a moment with you.
