It\u2019s only about an hour from the capital, so it\u2019s a great excursi\u00f3n (day trip) for when you don\u2019t have any Spanish lessons or homework!<\/span><\/h2><\/div>

So, you\u2019re in Madrid learning Spanish<\/b> and you\u2019ve visited a lot of the main sitios de inter\u00e9s <\/b>(<\/i>tourist attractions<\/i><\/b>).<\/i> You\u2019ve been speaking Spanish<\/b> loads and now are more confident with the madrile\u00f1o<\/b> accent. Now then, it\u2019s time to start exploring further afield and visiting all the beautiful ciudades<\/b> (<\/i>cities<\/i><\/b>)<\/i> near Madrid to get better acquainted with Spanish culture. A good first stop is Segovia<\/b> \u2013 a historic city classed as patrimonio de la humanidad<\/b> (<\/i>a world heritage site<\/i><\/b>)<\/i> since 1985.<\/p>\n

Segovia, or rather the area around where the current city stands, was settled hace<\/b> cincuenta mil a\u00f1os <\/b>(<\/i>50,000 years ago<\/i><\/b>)<\/i>. It was conquered by the Romans, who built the now world-famous acueducto <\/b>(<\/i>aqueduct<\/i><\/b>) <\/i>there in el siglo I A.C <\/b>(<\/i>the 1<\/i><\/b>st<\/sup><\/i><\/b><\/span> century BC<\/i><\/b>)<\/i>. Since then, Segovia has been conquered by the Moors, reconquered by Alfonso VI and attacked by the French in the Guerra de la independencia <\/b>(<\/i>the Peninsular War<\/i><\/b>)<\/i> \u2013 so it\u2019s seen its fair share of action over the centuries! Nowadays, it\u2019s more tranquilo <\/b>(<\/i>calm<\/i><\/b>) <\/i>so let\u2019s look at what to see and do there.<\/p>\n

Comer cochinillo asado<\/span><\/h2><\/div>

The first thing you should do is reservar una mesa<\/b> (<\/i>book a table<\/i><\/b>)<\/i> in one of the many good restaurants in the city and order cochinillo asado<\/b> (<\/i>roast suckling pig<\/i><\/b>) <\/i>for lunch. This is the plato t\u00edpico<\/b> (<\/i>typical dish<\/i><\/b>)<\/i> from the area and normally comes with patatas <\/b>(<\/i>potatoes<\/i><\/b>)<\/i>. It\u2019s a very contundente <\/b>(<\/i>hearty<\/i><\/b>)<\/i> dish so make sure you don\u2019t have a big breakfast beforehand! In some restaurants you can ask for more meat when you\u2019re done, so that\u2019ll give you a chance to practise your Spanish<\/b> too and then you can explain that \u201cestoy lleno<\/b>\u201d (<\/i>\u201cI\u2019m full\u201d<\/i><\/b>) <\/i>to the camarero\/a <\/i><\/b>(<\/i>waiter<\/i><\/b>)<\/i>!<\/p>\n

As we\u2019ve already mentioned, the most iconic landmark in Segovia is its acueducto<\/b> (<\/i>aqueduct<\/i><\/b>)<\/i>. Built sometime in the siglo II d.C <\/b>(<\/i>2<\/i><\/b>nd<\/sup><\/i><\/b><\/span> century AD<\/i><\/b>)<\/i>, it provided the city with water right up until 1973! It\u2019s a marvel of engineering as there is absolutely no cement holding the structure together, which also makes you wonder how it\u2019s survived for so long! In fact, there have been several reparaciones <\/b>(<\/i>repairs<\/i><\/b>)<\/i> done to the arches over the centuries so don\u2019t worry, it won\u2019t topple on you as you gaze up at it from below!<\/p>\n

When you see a picture of this beauty, you\u2019ll be forgiven for thinking of the castle in Disney\u2019s Cenicienta <\/b>(<\/i>Cinderella<\/i><\/b>) <\/i>and on the introduction to all their films, and that\u2019s because Walt Disney in fact took inspiration from the Alc\u00e1zar de Segovia<\/b> when designing it! The word alc\u00e1zar<\/b> translates as something like castle<\/i><\/b> or fort<\/i><\/b> and was originally constructed over some Roman remains to protect the town. It has served as a military base, royal residence and now a world-class museum. Definitely not to be missed on your trip!<\/p>\n

Pasar un rato en la catedral de Segovia<\/span><\/h2><\/div>

Another extremely important monumento <\/b>(<\/i>monument<\/i><\/b>) <\/i>in this city is its catedral <\/b>(<\/i>cathedral<\/i><\/b>)<\/i>. Pretty much every major city in Spain has an impressive cathedral, and Segovia is no exception. Having been built between the siglo XVI y XVII <\/b>(<\/i>16<\/i><\/b>th<\/sup><\/i><\/b><\/span> to 18<\/i><\/b>th<\/sup><\/i><\/b><\/span> centuries<\/i><\/b>)<\/i>, it is notable for having had the highest tower in Spain for a time at 108 metres. Today you can still climb the torre campanario <\/b>(<\/i>bell tower<\/i><\/b>) <\/i>where you can enjoy impressive views over the historic city.<\/p>\n

Remember how we said the alc\u00e1zar<\/b> de Segovia<\/b> served as the inspiration for the Disney castle logo? Well if you want the best views you need to dar un paseo <\/b>(<\/i>take a walk<\/i><\/b>)<\/i> a little outside the main city to the Mirador de la Pradera de San Marcos<\/b>. From here, you can see the alc\u00e1zar<\/b> in its full glory and also explore some of the beautiful countryside on the edge of the city. Just remember to take un plano<\/b> (<\/i>a map<\/i><\/b>) <\/i>with you so you can find your way back afterwards!<\/p>\n

Tomar un ponche segoviano de merienda<\/span><\/h2><\/div>

After having seen some of the sights, you probably fancy a little descanso <\/b>(<\/i>rest<\/i><\/b>)<\/i> before heading back to Madrid. We\u2019d recommend finding a little cafeteria <\/b>(<\/i>caf\u00e9<\/i><\/b>)<\/i> and having a merienda <\/b>(<\/i>afternoon tea\/snack<\/i><\/b>). <\/i>You could order a typical sweet treat from Segovia called ponche segoviano <\/b>(<\/i>Segovia \u201ccake\u201d<\/i><\/b>)<\/i> which is a type of sponge cake filled with cream and covered with az\u00facar glas <\/b>(<\/i>icing sugar<\/i><\/b>)<\/i>. It\u2019s delicious with a nice cup of caf\u00e9 <\/b>(<\/i>coffee<\/i><\/b>)<\/i> <\/b>and then you\u2019ll be ready for your trip home!<\/p>\n

There are, of course, plenty of other things to see and do in Segovia, so why not plan a trip there when you come to take a Spanish course<\/b><\/a> here in Madrid?<\/p>\n
