In this blog, we\u2019ll tell you what and how to order so you don\u2019t miss out on any of the most typical dishes.<\/span><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_custom_heading_wrap\"><div class=\"heading-text el-text\" ><h2 class=\"h3 text-accent-color\" ><span>Tomando el aperitivo un domingo<\/span><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"uncode_text_column\" ><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One of the most long-standing traditions in Madrid is to meet with friends on a Sunday morning for an <b><i>aperitivo <\/i><\/b>round about 12 o\u2019clock.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><b><i> <\/i><\/b>You\u2019ll see groups of friends of all ages, with prams and kids too standing outside a bar and having a drink and snacks before their big late lunches at 3 o\u2019clock. (The tradition has also been known to extend over lunchtime and just stay there to eat with the <b><i>tapas <\/i><\/b>too) The typical thing to have is either a <b><i>ca\u00f1a<\/i><\/b> (small beer) or a <b><i>vermut<\/i><\/b> (a red martini) \u2013 this latter drink is often served on tap <b><i>(de grifo)<\/i> <\/b>and is not the usual bottle-bought variety. It is served with a lot of ice and slice of orange and in summer, to make it a long drink (as it is usually high in alcohol content!) with <b><i>gaseosa <\/i><\/b>(a Spanish, no-calorie, sugar-free type of lemonade). <b><i>\u00a1Delicioso! <\/i><\/b>And don\u2019t forget that the best thing of having a drink in a bar in Spain is that they\u2019ll always give you a free small snack (<b><i>tapa) <\/i><\/b>with it too! Depending on the generosity of the bar, this could be a small dish of paella, or stew (<b><i>guiso) <\/i><\/b>or olives <b><i>(aceitunas) <\/i><\/b>or crisps <i>(<\/i><b><i>patatas fritas).<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">NB: Do you know why they call these bar snacks <b><i>tapas?<\/i> <\/b>The most accepted version of the origin of the <b><i>tapa <\/i><\/b>is because the bartender would cover <b><i>(tapar)<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i>the customer\u00b4s drink with a small plate to keep the flies out of it and on the plate they\u2019d put a bit of food.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>\u201cUn vermut, por favor (con gaseosa).\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>\u201cUna ca\u00f1a y dos dobles, por favor<\/i><\/b><i>.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>(A small beer and two large ones please)<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><div class=\"vc_custom_heading_wrap\"><div class=\"heading-text el-text\" ><h2 class=\"h3 text-accent-color\" ><span>Ir de tapas \/ tapear<\/span><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"uncode_text_column\" ><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If anyone suggests the above \u2013 they mean to do a bit of bar-hopping and go to different places to have a drink and the accompanying bar snack. If you want something a little more substantial, you can order <b><i>raciones <\/i><\/b>(a bigger plate of something that isn\u2019t free) that you can all share. You order a <b><i>media raci\u00f3n <\/i><\/b>(half ration)<b> <\/b>as well. This could be cheese (<b><i>queso manchego)<\/i><\/b>, ham<i> <\/i><b><i>(jam\u00f3n serrano), <\/i><\/b>or some fish dishes like<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><b><i>chopitos <\/i><\/b>(tiny fried cuttlefish)<b><i>, bienmesabe\/caz\u00f3n <\/i><\/b>(dogfish)<b><i>, calamares <\/i><\/b>(squid rings), <b><i>pulpo <\/i><\/b>(octopus), <b><i>sepia <\/i>(<\/b>cuttlefish), <b><i>gambas (<\/i><\/b>prawns), <b><i>ensaladilla rusa <\/i><\/b>(vegetables in cubes in mayonnaise sauce), <b><i>torreznos<\/i><\/b> (pork scratchings\/rind) or <b><i>tortilla espa\u00f1ola <\/i><\/b>(Spanish omelette, made with eggs, potatoes and onion), <b><i>bravas <\/i><\/b>(so called because the roasted potato cubes come with a sauce of spicy tomato), <b><i>croquetas <\/i>(<\/b>croquettes made of b\u00e9chamel sauce with ham, mushroom etc. and covered in breadcrumbs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>\u201cVamos a compartir todo.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>(<\/b>We\u2019re going to share it all.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>\u201cUn poco m\u00e1s de pan, por favor.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/i><\/b>(A bit more bread please)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">NB: IN the north of Spain, in the Basque country, the bars are famous for their tapas but there they call them <b><i>pinxtos. <\/i><\/b>They are usually of very good quality but you have to pay for them \u2013 often around 1 or 2\u20ac each. With a few of these you will have eaten enough for a full meal!<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><div class=\"vc_custom_heading_wrap\"><div class=\"heading-text el-text\" ><h2 class=\"h3 text-accent-color\" ><span>Desayunar fuera<\/span><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"uncode_text_column\" ><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Spanish are not generally fond of big breakfasts at home, many prefer to have a quick coffee at home before leaving and then around 11am, they\u2019ll go out to a bar and have another coffee and a <b><i>tostada, croisan o pincho de tortilla, <\/i><\/b>probably with workmates. It is also a great way to check whether you&#8217;ve done your homework correctly with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escuela-hablamos.com\/ko\/our-courses\/\">Hablamos classmates<\/a> \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s a sociable time to have a break and bite to eat. This will see them through until lunchtime, normally around 2.30pm.<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><div class=\"vc_custom_heading_wrap\"><div class=\"heading-text el-text\" ><h2 class=\"h3 text-accent-color\" ><span>Comer un men\u00fa del d\u00eda<\/span><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"uncode_text_column\" ><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Spanish tend to eat their main meal of the day at lunchtime, a tradition which comes from when everything used to close down at lunchtime between 2 and 5pm and people used to sleep a siesta at home. Those times have now virtually disappeared but the tradition remains to eat a more substantial meal in the middle of the day. If you are working, many people will go for a menu of the day at a local bar or restaurant. They are very good value for money (around 12\u20ac) and will include un <b><i>primer plato <\/i><\/b>(first course)<b><i>, un plato principal (<\/i><\/b>main course)<b><i>, postre <\/i><\/b>(dessert) <b><i>o caf\u00e9 <\/i><\/b>(coffee or tea) <b><i>y una bebida <\/i><\/b>(a drink) of water, wine, beer or fizzy drink<b><i>. <\/i><\/b>For one person, it really isn\u2019t worth shopping for and cooking all that for that price, is it? ha ha! The <b><i>men\u00fa del d\u00eda<\/i><\/b> is normally served from Monday to Friday between 1:30-3:30pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Typical first courses: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>Ensalada, sopa, pasta, pescado frito <\/i><\/b>(fried fish)<b><i>, verduras <\/i><\/b>(vegetables).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Main courses:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>Cocido madrile\u00f1o, <\/i><\/b>a local dish of a first course of soup <b><i>(sopa)<\/i><\/b> with pasta, followed by a main course of chickpeas <b><i>(garbanzos), <\/i><\/b>potatoes, meat, carrots and cabbage <b>(repollo). <\/b>Very tasty! <b>\u00a1Riqu\u00edsimo!<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>Guisos <\/i><\/b>(stews), <b><i>pescado <\/i><\/b>(fish), <b><i>filete <\/i><\/b>(steak)<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><div class=\"vc_custom_heading_wrap\"><div class=\"heading-text el-text\" ><h2 class=\"h3 text-accent-color\" ><span>Salir a cenar<\/span><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"uncode_text_column\" ><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A typical pastime on Spain is to go out for dinner, usually at the weekend. This can take the form of anything from a light meal of <b><i>raciones<\/i><\/b> or a more elegant meal and is usually eaten between 8:30-10:30pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>\u201cMe gustar\u00eda reservar una mesa para dos a las 9<\/i><\/b><i>.\u201d\u00a0 <\/i>(I\u2019d like to book a table for two at 9)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>\u201cTengo una reserva para dos personas a las 10.\u201d\u00a0 <\/i><\/b>(I have a reservation for two at 10pm.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>\u201c\u00bfNos puede dar una mesa en la terraza?\u201d\u00a0 <\/i><\/b>(Can we have a table on the terrace?)<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><div class=\"vc_custom_heading_wrap\"><div class=\"heading-text el-text\" ><h2 class=\"h3 text-accent-color\" ><span>Salir de copas<\/span><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"uncode_text_column\" ><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If anyone asks you to do this, you know it will be a late night! The Spanish tend to go out after dinner around 11pm. <b><i>Copas <\/i><\/b>are normally considered to be spirits like un <b><i>gin-tonic, un ron con coca-cola, <\/i>etc. <\/b>and often taken in a pub (they pronounce it<b> <i>paf!)<\/i><\/b> or a bar or in a club. It is quite normal to either pay an entrance fee to a club but this will often include a drink <b><i>(una consumici\u00f3n).<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So, now you know how to eat and drink and order the typical things in Madrid \u2013 take advantage and go and try out your new knowledge!
