Are you planning your next holiday to Spain? Fantastic! You\u2019ve probably already booked your flight or train, reserved your hotel, and maybe even started thinking about what to pack\u2026 and now it\u2019s time to learn a bit of Spanish! But where to start?<\/span><\/h2><\/div>

Don\u2019t worry if learning Spanish is the one thing you\u2019ve left until the last minute. It\u2019s never too late to start studying \u2014 even just a little Spanish can help you communicate with locals during your trip.<\/p>\n

Be realistic<\/span><\/h2><\/div>

It doesn\u2019t matter whether you\u2019re a complete beginner or if you\u2019ve been studying Spanish for years in your home country \u2014 when you speak to native speakers during your trip, they won\u2019t know your level, or what grammar or vocabulary you\u2019ve studied. They\u2019ll speak faster or slower depending on the situation, but they\u2019ll still use everyday words, slang, and sentence structures you might not know. Spain is no different from other countries in that way \u2014 and it\u2019s totally normal!<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to be realistic about the kind of Spanish you\u2019ll need for your trip \u2014 and the time you have (or don\u2019t have) to learn it.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re just starting out, focus first on learning how to say hello and goodbye, how to thank someone, and how to introduce yourself. It\u2019s also helpful to be able to give some basic information about your trip, like:\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re from Norway and we\u2019ll be in Spain for one week.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s also a good idea to learn a few key questions and answers \u2014 for example, asking where your hotel is, how much something costs, or when something opens. And when it comes to food, be prepared with the essential words you\u2019ll find on menus or signs, the names of typical dishes and ingredients \u2014 especially if you have any allergies.<\/p>\n

Here in Spain, we love it when visitors try to speak our language \u2014 and don\u2019t worry if your pronunciation isn\u2019t perfect or if you mix up your churros\u2019 gender!<\/p>\n<\/div>

Practice speaking<\/span><\/h2><\/div>

Grammar, vocabulary, spelling\u2026 all of these are important when you\u2019re learning a language. But when you\u2019re travelling, the most useful skill is\u00a0speaking<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 and\u00a0understanding<\/strong>\u00a0what others are saying.<\/p>\n

So, get used to speaking out loud the words and phrases you\u2019re learning. It doesn\u2019t matter if you practise in front of the mirror, with your travel companions, or even your dog (they won\u2019t mind if they don\u2019t understand). The key is to make yourself understood \u2014 nobody\u2019s going to judge your pronunciation, your accent, or whether your grammar is perfect.<\/p>\n<\/div>

What will you need?<\/span><\/h2><\/div>

Not everyone travels the same way. So especially if you\u2019re a beginner, focus on the vocabulary and situations that are most relevant for\u00a0your<\/strong>\u00a0trip.
\nIf you\u2019re vegetarian, it\u2019ll be helpful to learn the different words for meat and how to ask a waiter:\u00a0\u201cDo you have a vegetarian menu?\u201d<\/strong>
\nIf you\u2019re travelling with young children, it might be more useful to learn how to ask about child discounts at museums.<\/p>\n

Also, remember: you don\u2019t always need to use a full sentence. Instead of saying,
\n\u201cExcuse me, would you mind telling me where the bathroom is?\u201d<\/strong>
\nyou can simply ask:
\n\u201c\u00bfEl ba\u00f1o<\/em>?\u201d<\/strong>
\n\u2014 and you\u2019ll get your answer just as fast.<\/p>\n<\/div>

What if I already know a little Spanish?<\/span><\/h2><\/div>
<\/div><\/div>

That\u2019s great! If you\u2019ve studied some Spanish already, your trip is a perfect opportunity to practise and learn even more.<\/p>\n

And don\u2019t worry if you haven\u2019t mastered all the tenses \u2014 like the four different past forms in Spanish. Just use the one that feels easiest. You\u2019re on holiday, not taking a test!<\/p>\n<\/div>

If you want to improve your Spanish, don\u2019t be shy about asking questions. You can walk into a shop and ask:
\n\u201cWhat\u2019s this called?\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0\u201cIs this how you say \u2018camiseta<\/em>\u2019?\u201d<\/strong>
